Christ - the seed of Abraham

"And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed." (Genesis 12:3)

"And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice." (Genesis 22:18)

"Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws." (Genesis 26:3-5)

God introduces the word "seed" as soon as "sin" darkens the text of Scripture. Encapsulated in the word is the thought of future potential and a posterity. So God has His Seed and despite the awful consequences of sin, with Him there is always promise and purpose. If no one else can deal with it, God can.

So the Seed of the woman is seen to be the divine remedy for the serpent and all his wiles (Gen. 3:15). We have no problems in identifying the Lord Jesus as the One to whom God is referring. All the other seed of Adam was defiled, but the Lord Jesus came in hole and undefiled.

Now when the time came to produce the family from whose descendants this Seed would ultimately spring, God calls Abram and makes him aware of the destiny that awaits him. So, Paul happily states, “to Abraham and his seed were the promises made” (Gal 3:16). The Seed that would deal with sin would be from such ancestry.

When you begin to think about the promises made to Abraham, you are confronted with things that have to do with God’s ultimate blessings for all men. God's promises had to do with the “descendants” that God said he would have. They would be as the sand of the sea shore and as and the stars of the heaven for multitude, to enter into eternal blessings. Abraham would be the father of many nations (Rom. 4:13-17).

The question now needs to be asked as to how God could commit Himself to the promise and the fulfilment of these things with such certainty. In Galatians 3:16, Paul argues that these things were promised to Abraham and to his Seed, that through One only, and that Seed was Christ.

In this lies the heart of the matter. With the ultimate defeat of Satan and with every fulfilment of all His promises, God looks not to the sons of Adam, but to the Son of God. It is only in Christ that the promises of God find ultimate fulfilment.

Hallelujah, what a Saviour! Today let us rejoice in Him alone for all God’s promises in Him are yea and amen (2 Cor. 1:20).

"He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgement in the earth" (Isa. 42:4).
