God’s essence and His attributes
God is always light and love. He is always omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent. He still has the same power today that He had when He brought the universe into existence or when He raised Christ from the dead. This is why the Bible speaks of His eternal power (see Rom 1:20). The nature of God and His divine attributes are unchangeable!
The moral attributes of God: He is completely unaffected by the flow of time. With Him there is no progress or regress. He cannot be more merciful or just than He has always been.
- "For good is the LORD; his lovingkindness endures forever, and his faithfulness from generation to generation" (Psalm 100:5). God is the everlasting Father of lights, "with whom is no variation, nor shadow of turning" (Jason 1:17). He is always good - always! "For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but my loving-kindness shall not depart from thee" (Isaiah 54:10). What is the consequence of this: "Taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who trusts in him!" (Psalm 34:9)
- His love does not change either. He still loves us today with the same love with which He loved us when Christ died for us on the cross. The Book of Jeremiah says, "Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love" (Jeremiah 31:3). The Book of Revelation says: "To Him who loves us and has washed us from our sins in His blood" (Revelation 1:6). It does not say here: to Him who loved us, but: To Him who loves us. It is still the same love! And Paul writes in Romans 8 that nothing and no one can ever separate us from this love (see Romans 8:39).
- But God's wrath toward sin and evil is also unchanging. The immutability of God has a light and a dark side, like the cloud that came between the Israelites and the Egyptians. They include the fulfillment of His precious promises to the believers, but also the execution of His threats of judgment to those who do not obey the gospel. If anyone does not believe in the Son of God, the wrath of God abides on him (see John 3:36).
- All of God's attributes are unchanging and are in perfect balance with each other. He remains true to Himself!
