The Attributes of God
I would like to give a brief overview of what the Bible tells us about the attributes of God:
- First of all, God exists in Himself, He is self-existent. This means that He has life in Himself, that He does not need anyone to exist. That alone is worthy of our worship.
- But God is not only self-existent, God is also a spirit. This means that God is actually invisible. We know: In Christ He became man and thereby also visible, but actually we cannot see God and as a spirit He has no limitations to which He is subject. This is also wonderful.
- God is infinite. He is infinite in His greatness, in His power, in His wisdom. "Infinite" is actually something we cannot even imagine. What is infinite + 1? It’s beyond our comprehension (oder: It blows our minds), and again, that is worthy of our worship.
- God is perfect, and because He is perfect and brilliant, one cannot improve Him.
- God does not change, He always remains perfect, always brilliant, just as He is.
- God is sovereign, He rules over time and eternity, He reigns, He is in control of all things, no one can resist His will.
- We know that God is omniscient, He knows everything, the past, the present and the future.
- He is omnipresent, you cannot run away from His face, He is at the ends of the earth, He is in heaven, He is in Sheol.
- God is omnipotent, He can do whatever He wants, He has no limits.
These are all unique attributes of God. But we can also think about the attributes of God in moral terms: God is light and God is love, and from these two attributes all the other attributes of God are derived morally. These include that God is holy, sinless, pure, that He is just, that He is gracious and merciful, that He is faithful.
These are all wonderful attributes of God that should have an impact on our life of faith. Of course, all of this is revealed in perfection in Christ, in the Son of the living God.
